Three-time champion Venus Williams was out of the tournament after being defeated in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open, world number 93 Danielle Collins. Venus, the world's eighth player, had to face 2-6, 3-6 in the hands of qualifiers collins.
The 24-year-old Collins of the United States, playing in this tournament for the first time, defeated 37-year-old compatriot Venus in one hour and 29 minutes to win his career's biggest victory.
