Bajrang Punia touches the World No. 1 rank in 65Kg category

  • Star Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia today touched a new high in his career by achieving the number one rank in the world in the 65kg category.
  • The 24-year-old Bajrang was placed atop the ranking table with 96 points in the United World Wrestling (UWW) list.
United World Wrestling is the international governing body for the sport of amateur wrestling. Its duties include overseeing wrestling at the Olympics. Bajrang has won five medals this season, including Common Wealth Games and the Asian Games gold and a silver at the World Championship in Budapest.
  • Bajrang was also the only Indian grappler to be given a seeding at the Budapest World Championship.
  • Cuba's Alejandro Enrique Vlades Tobier is a distant second with 66 points. Russia's Akhmed Chakaev is in third place.
  • Interestingly, Bajrang is the lone male Indian to figure in top-10 but the country has five female wrestlers who are in a top-10 bracket in their respective categories. They are Pooja Dhanda, Ritu Phogat, Sarita Mor, Navjot Kaur, and Kiran.
