The Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill passed


  • On 25th July 2019, Lok Sabha passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage), Bill. The Muslim Women Bill was introduced by the Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad (age 64 years). The bill is for the Justice, Respect, and Dignity of Muslim Women.
  • The Bill was intended to protect the marriage rights of Muslim women in India by banning the triple talaq, which enables Muslim men, but not women, to instantly divorce their wives.

    Provisions
    i) The Muslim Women Bill criminalizes instant triple talaq among Muslims. It also approves a jail term of 3-years for the husband.
    ii) All declarations of instant triple talaq, including in written or electronic form, will be void (i.e. not enforceable in law) and illegal.
    iii) Around 20-Muslim countries in the world, including Pakistan and Malaysia, have banned the triple talaq, etc.
