Government Launches 'Jal Shakti Abhiyan' For Water Conservation


  • The Central Government has launched 'Jal Shakti Abhiyan' across the country to create awareness on the benefits of water conservation and declining sources of water.
  • Gajendra Singh Shekhawat (Minister of Jal Shakti) will launch the scheme from New Delhi.
  • Over 250 officers, including Additional and Joint Secretaries, have been appointed as in-charge of water-stressed districts in the country to plan ways to conserve the natural resource.
  • The Jal Shakti Abhiyan has been launched in 2-phases.
  • The 1st phase is 1st July to 15th September and is for all participating States and the 2nd phase will be between 1st October to 30th November for States with retreating monsoon.
  • Under Jal Shakti Abhiyan, the focus will be on 256 water stressed districts and 1,592 water stressed blocks.
  • There are 5-key intervention areas under the movement including water conservation and rainwater harvesting, renovation of traditional and other water bodies, reuse, borewell recharge structures, watershed development, and intensive afforestation.
