- The Indian Space Agency-ISRO sets up Space Situational Awareness Control Centre (SSAM) at Peenya in Bengaluru. The Chairman of ISRO K. Sivan (age 62 years) laid the foundation stone.
- On the occasion, ISRO said that SSAM has become an internationally significant area due to the ever-growing manmade space debris population and the increased collision threat with operational spacecraft.
- The objective of this control center would facilitate the intensified activities foreseen for SSAM, in view of the increasing debris population and operational space assets.
- The SSAM Center would organize a series of activities related to the protection of Indian space assets against inactive satellites, pieces of objects in orbit, near-Earth asteroids and adverse weather conditions.
