Three-time champion Venus Williams was out of the tournament after being defeated in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open, world number 93 Danielle Collins. Venus, the world's eighth player, had to face 2-6, 3-6 in the hands of qualifiers collins.
The 24-year-old Collins of the United States, playing in this tournament for the first time, defeated 37-year-old compatriot Venus in one hour and 29 minutes to win his career's biggest victory. For the second time, in the professional session, Collins defeated any player in the top ten for the first time.
