New Species of Fish 'Puntius Sanctus' discovered in Velankanni, Tamil Nadu


  • A team of researchers headed by Professor Mathews Plamoottil has discovered a new species of small freshwater fish named 'Puntius Sanctus' in Velankanni, Tamil Nadu. The new species of fish belong to the family Cyprinidae.
    Professor Mathews Plamoottil is the Head of the Department of Zoology at the BJM Government College, Chavara (Kerala).
  • Puntius Sanctus,
    - Puntius Sanctus is a silver-hued fish, that is locally termed as Paral in Kerala and Kende in Tamil Nadu. This fish is very small and Grows up-to 7 cm.
    - Its physical features include a ‘protractible mouth’, a pair of ‘maxillary barbels’ (a sensory organ near the mouth), 24-25 lateral line titrations, and 10 pre-dorsal scales.
