Uyghur economist Ilham Tohti wins Sakharov Prize


  • The Parliament of the European Union (EU) has awarded the Uyghur economist Ilham Tohti (age 50 years) with the Sakharov Prize.
  • The award was announced by European Parliament for his attempts to "Foster Dialogue" between Chinese people and the Uighur.
  • The Sakharov Prize is named after Russian scientist and dissident Andrei Sakharov. It honors individuals and groups of people who have dedicated their lives to the defense of human rights and freedom of thought.
  • The first prize was awarded jointly to South African Nelson Mandela and Russian Anatoly Marchenko.
