- According to Electronics and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, the Government has plans to provide internet connectivity to all gram panchayats under BharatNet Project.
- Prasad said that 1,28,870 gram panchayats have been connected with optical fiber.
- Under this project, the last mile connectivity is to be provided at all the 2,50,000 gram panchayats. Prasad informed that wifi spots have been installed in 44,140-gram panchayats as of now in the country.
- In Dec 2017, Phase-I project was completed, and 1,00,000 gram panchayats were made service ready.
- Phase II is under implementation, and a total of 2,00,000 gram panchayats are targeted to be completed by March 2020.
