- Indian writer Amitav Ghosh (age 63-years) honored with 54th Jnanpith Award. He becomes the first English author to win this award.
- Jnanpith Award, the country’s highest literary award given to an author for outstanding contribution to literature.
- In 2007, Ghosh was honored with Padma Shri and in 1989 Sahitya Akademi Award.
- The popular novels of Ghosh are- "Shadow Lines", "The Glass Palace", "The Hungry Tide", and Ibis Trilogy -- "Sea of Poppies (2008)", "River of Smoke", and "Flood of Fire" -- chronicling the Opium trade between India and China run by the East India Company.
