- 13 April 2019. Professor Najma Akhtar has been appointed as the first women vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia.
- Smt. Akhtar has been appointed for a period of 5-years.
- Smt. Akhtar becomes the first lady vice-chancellor of any central university in Delhi.
- She is a gold medalist from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and completed her Ph.D. (Education) from Kurukshetra University.
- She was the founder director of the State Institute of Educational Management and Training (SIEMAT), Uttar Pradesh, which was established for developing educational administrators for the country.
- She has earned international accolades, including Commonwealth scholarship and the prestigious National Science Talent scholarship.
