- In Indonesia, many people are reported trapped after a powerful earthquake and tsunami struck Sulawesi island on Friday. The national disaster agency says at least 832 people have been killed. Vice-President Jusuf Kalla said the final death toll could be thousands as many regions have still not been reached.
- Indonesian President Joko Widodo reached the region this afternoon. Rescuers are struggling to reach scores of trapped victims. Health officials resorted to mass burials to avoid the spread of disease and desperate residents looted shops for food and water.
- Satellite imagery provided by regional relief teams showed severe damage at some of the area's major ports, with large ships tossed on land, quays and bridges trashed and shipping containers are thrown around. Hospitals were overwhelmed by the influx of injured, with many people being treated in the open air. There were widespread power blackouts.
