International Day of Older Persons Observed on 1st October


  • International Day of Older Persons is being observed on Monday. The theme of the 2018 commemoration is "Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions". The day is celebrated by raising awareness about issues affecting the elderly, such as senescence and elder abuse. It is also a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society.
  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Monday conferred the "Vayoshreshtha Samman" on eminent senior citizens and institutions in recognition of their services towards the cause of the elderly persons on the occasion of "International Day of Older Persons" which is celebrated every year on 1st October since 2005.
  • Women empowerment is need of the hour: Vice President Venkaiah Naidu also said that women empowerment is need of the hour. He added that Wherever women are given responsibility, they are doing exceptional work.
  • Union Minister for Social Justice & Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot was also present at the function. He said that the ministry has launched a new scheme- Vayoshree yojana, which aims at providing physical aids and assisted-living devices for senior citizens belonging to Below Poverty Line category.
